Ceasefire Resolution at Austin City Council

Austin For Palestine Coalition Rally at City Hall

The Austin Human Rights Commission passed a resolution urging the City Council to publicly call for a ceasefire. In a historic 7-1 vote, the Human Rights Commission of Austin, the 10th largest city in the United States, calls for a ceasefire and to combat the rising anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, and anti-Arab sentiments.

We are calling on City Council Members to adopt this resolution demanding a humanitarian ceasefire!

Our hard-earned US tax dollars must not be channeled into the support and acquisition of weapons that fuel the devastating bombardment of innocent civilians in Gaza.

This resolution unequivocally advocates for the liberation of Israeli hostages and the urgent reinstatement of life-sustaining supplies to the people of Gaza.

Recent findings from The Nation (November 16, 2023) show that 73% of potential Democratic voters favor candidates supporting a cease-fire, with 46% strongly backing them. In Austin’s Travis County, a resounding 79% are more likely to support Representative Cesar for his pro-cease-fire stance, especially after a major supportive march.

If you’re wondering about the influence of your office on global matters, consider this: You might later regret not taking every possible step to prevent harm and save lives. Every additional person, elected official, or city that speaks up can make a difference!

We ask you to stand with impactful allies! The Central Labor Council (CLC), Austin Justice Coalition (AJC), and Indian American Coalition of Central Texas (IACCT) rally behind the Ceasefire resolution.

Why Austin?

  • Texas has the 8th largest economy in the WORLD. Austin is its capital.
  • Austin’s share of federal tax dollars is $14 million.
  • Gov. Abbott & Seat of Texas government is here and Austin city’s resolution will be noticed by them. Texas has declared itself an unwavering ally of Israel; why a state in the US that is not a country needs to have an alliance with a foreign government is unclear. Gov. Abbott has taken many specific actions to punish supporters of the Palestinian cause (anti-BDS bill), and support the Israeli occupation financially.

The Austin Human Rights Commission has issued a resolution calling for tackling Islamophobia, Anti-Semitism and calling for a Ceasefire. Listen to meeting Audio and a huge turn out for testimony here.
